Learning to See: The Art of Perception

The arrival of longer days, warmer sunshine, and an abundance of wildflowers in bloom brings an atmosphere of creativity, inspiration, and exploration to Newfoundland’s Fogo Island.

Guests staying at Fogo Island Inn will experience first-hand the artistic benefits of being far away from far away on a remote island off an island in the North Atlantic. Visitors can reserve time with resident and visiting artists for workshops in a variety of artistic media that stimulate creativity and open their hearts and minds to the beauty of Fogo Island just waiting to be translated into works of art. From painting and printmaking to drawing and frottage—a wide variety of offerings are available to participants of all levels of expertise and experience. These classes are tailored to guests’ interests and allow them to explore both traditional and contemporary art and design practices.

For the 2018 Summer Season, Fogo Island Inn will welcome multidisciplinary artist Bruce Pashak to lead art workshops for guests. Bruce uses imagery, text, and technology to create abstract anti-narratives that both affirm and break free of culturally-encoded associations and limitations. His pieces are self-described playgrounds for the imagination, “riddles that you might try to puzzle out but never need to solve.” He has exhibited at over 40 group and solo shows throughout Canada, the USA, and Europe, including the Miami Art Fair in 2015, and Back Gallery Project in Vancouver in 2016. A professor in the Faculties of Fine Arts at three Canadian universities for a culmination of 16 years, Bruce continues his theoretical enquires into the construction and dissemination of perception with a studio practice, as well as the creative collaboration “PLACE” (Pashak Langdon Affirmative Common Experience) with textile artist Janet Langdon.

A Summer Art Workshop can be arranged for $150 per person. Each three-hour session can accommodate up to four people and includes all materials. Available upon request. All ages and experience levels welcome. To inquire about availability, please call: +1 709 658 3444.
