Travel by ferry to Fogo Island. While on the ferry, arrange a visit to the captain’s deck. Arrive on Fogo Island and make the 30-minute drive to the Fogo Island Inn: keep your eyes peeled for glimpses of the ocean and Fogo Island’s caribou. You will be greeted at the Inn with warm smiles and a welcome snack. Our friendly staff will show you to your suite and allow you to settle in to your home away from home. When you’re ready, head down to the longue where parents can enjoy a refreshing beverage, and kids can munch on some delicious bar snacks. Finally, sit down to supper in the dining room, where Fogo Island Inn's culinary team will have prepared an unforgettable menu including kid-friendly options.
After supper, check out the rooftop deck and look way up for a glimpse at the bright moon and stars. Adults can unwind in the hot tubs or saunas while kids catch a film in the cinema, or play a game of cards in their suite. For youngsters, childcare services are available for an additional fee.
Arrange a Ketanja boat tour of Little Fogo Islands and see puffins, icebergs and whales depending on the season. Explore Little Fogo Islands on foot and feel like you’ve been transported back in time. Return to the Inn for lunch before heading out for an “all about boats” afternoon: meet with a local boat builder who will show you how to tie nautical knots and how to row a traditional Fogo Island punt. Alternatively (or additionally), visit a longliner to learn how a fishing boat operates. For supper, head to Sandy Cove beach in the Irish community of Tilting for a beach boil-up. Kids can learn how to crack crab legs, and adults can enjoy a few beers on the sand. Those who’d prefer to stay closer to Inn can take in a bonfire on the rocks complete with local music. In the summer months, don’t forget to make to Growler’s ice cream shop before closing time!
Another day in the great outdoors. Explore the coastline and feel what it’s like to grow up in this singular place. During the winter, go out on a snowmobiling adventure and whiz across the frozen ponds of the Island’s interior. Skate across the long-frozen ponds, snowshoe across the barrens, and maybe even try your hand at ice fishing for trout. Warm up at a local cabin and maybe even feast on a traditional Jigg’s dinner complete with delicious salt meat. Stay out for as little or as long as you’d like: the warmth of the Inn is never too far away.
Our enthusiastic Community Hosting Coordinators will work with you to fill your time on Fogo Island with activities and outings ideally suited for your family. With no waterslides or costumed cartoon characters in sight, your time at the Fogo Island Inn will be steeped in the care and culture of this remarkable place: a genuinely felt experience for your family to cherish.
“Aside from breaking the cookie-cutter design mold, Fogo Island Inn is a destination for ultra-local experiences. In lieu of a concierge, a community host coordinator calls you ahead of your stay to gauge your interests and craft an itinerary with the appropriate Fogo inhabitants (they aren’t hotel employees). Activities run the gamut… The reason to try these hyper-local experiences is that Fogoers, whether they are born-and-raised natives or just temporary artists-in-residence, have a passion for the unusual island that’s infectious and a warm hospitality for their visitors. You’ll have to trek a bit to this far-off destination, but you won’t feel far from home.”
