Winter Cabin Outing

Winter has a bad reputation.

Conjuring full-body shivers and a begrudging sense of too much time spent with a snow shovel in hand, the mere mention of those frosty winter months sends many into a spiral of dread. Icicles are quickly recast from beautiful to dangerous, cozy starts to feel closer to cloistered, and snow and ice are the lead villains in the story of wintertime.

But there is a place where snow and ice are heroes of adventure, fun, relaxation, and time well spent with family and friends. Colder months coupled with a blanket of chilled precipitation create an inland playground serviced by trails both well-travelled and waiting to be forged. Traditional Newfoundland cabins are the primary setting for this wild and wonderful winter amusement on Fogo Island.

Fogo Island Inn’s annual Winter Cabin Outing runs through January and February’s Winter Season and continues during Pack Ice Season in March. A Fogo Island cabin experience finds kids playing as kids should (with abandon) and adults of all ages feeling like 8-year-olds as they rediscover the truest feelings of fun and freedom. Join the Winter Cabin Outing by hopping onboard a snowmobile and gliding across frozen barrens and ponds to reach your destination: an inland cabin tucked away in the protection of a snow-laden forest. Warm up by the fire inside; it’s been burning for a little while in anticipation of your arrival. Find a traditional jigg’s dinner on the stove and feel free to keep your boots on as you sit and relax in the company of family and friends, new and old.

The full board, three night itinerary for a Winter Cabin Outing stay at Fogo Island Inn begins at $1,575 per night, exclusive of taxes and includes: all meals, an Island orientation with a Community Host, and a range of outdoor activities and excursions. Rates are based on two persons sharing (solo travellers deduct $200 off base rate). Family suites are available and the Winter Cabin Outing itinerary can be modified to a two-night stay.

After a short drive from the ferry, with natural beauty around every bend, check into Fogo Island Inn, a masterpiece of modern architecture and design, named to Condé Nast Traveller’s Gold List 2016. Enjoy cocktails, warm drinks and small bites as a prelude to your evening meal. Prepared by the Kitchen Collective, supper will incorporate the bounty of land and sea. Before tucking in for the night, catch a film at the Inn’s 37-seat cinema.

Suit up in winter gear for your cabin adventure. Snowshoe or snowmobile to the centre of Fogo Island, then spend the day partaking in traditional outdoor fun, from tobogganing to snowshoeing to skating on frozen ponds to ice fishing. Help build the bonfire for a traditional boil-up. Later, after dinner in the Inn’s restaurant with its floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Atlantic, you can unwind from the day’s activities in the rooftop sauna and hot tubs, gazing up at the infinite starry sky.

Grab your mitts and hats and join a Community Host for an Island orientation that will immerse you in the history and culture of this singular place. Later, you might bore holes in the pond ice and catch the trout swimming below the frozen surface, hike a few pristine trails, or strap on some skates for a quick glide around the pond. Others might choose to stay cozy and revel in the offerings of the Inn by browsing the library collection, taking in an exhibit at the Gallery, or sipping one of our craft cocktails made from the Island’s many varieties of edible berries before your evening meal.

Enjoy the daybreak box of hot drinks and warm baked treats left at your door at the crack of dawn each morning from the comfort of your suite. Once you’ve finished your packing, fortify yourself for the journey home with a full farewell breakfast in the Dining Room.
