An Artful Summer

All summer long, Fogo Island Inn offers a range of artist workshops, in collaboration with Fogo Island Arts. The artist-led workshops encourage creative exploration and hands-on making through a variety of artistic media, including plein-air sketching, watercolour excursions, printmaking, textiles and even bookmaking. Open to all levels of experience and designed by local and visiting artists, these workshops are available upon request to small groups and are tailored to participants’ interests.

During the weeks of July 3 to 28 and again from August 2 to September 29, 2016, visiting artist Lili Huston-Herterich leads a series of summer workshops using the natural elements of Fogo Island to produce one-of-a-kind works of art.

Artists of all levels may learn the art of creating Cyanotypes, or sun prints, one of the earliest forms of photographic image-making. Using traditional, non-toxic photographic chemicals and the sun’s light, the workshop will show from beginning to end the process of making these beautiful blue prints. Whether executed on paper or on fabric, Fogo Island’s sun will be the main ingredient in this unique printing process.

Turning to the sea, Lili will offer watercolour workshops that draw inspiration from the beautiful shores of Shoal Bay. Guiding participants from pencil sketch to a finished piece, these workshops will experiment with different types of water (distilled, tap, and sea water) to create varying effects on the final works, making Fogo Island's water the elemental component of these works.

Artist-led workshops can be arranged for $150 per person, for a three-hour session, up to a maximum of four people per group. Open to all levels of experience; materials provided.
