Stargazing with Skipper Jim Gillard
Jim Gillard is the proud owner of his own backyard observatory—a happy accident that came about after he splurged on a powerful (and unexpectedly gigantic) telescope.
Lugging the telescope back and forth between his house and his deck on clear nights became such a chore that the Twillingate resident and his wife, Audrey, built a dome-walled, flat-roofed permanent home for the impressive equipment. Then they opened up their observatory to the public, so Jim could share his passion for all things celestial.
Also a skipper giving guided tours on Iceberg Alley, Jim Gillard knows the North Atlantic seas and skies intimately from a lifetime of observation and firsthand experience. So we’re honoured—and a little star struck—here at Fogo Island Inn to be welcoming him as our astronomer-in-residence, the weekend of November 30 to December 2, 2018.
On the Friday evening, there will be a reception and meet-and-greet in our lobby, then we’ll have supper, made from island ingredients, by Executive Chef Jonathan Gushue and his kitchen team. After supper, Jim will present a dark sky primer on the astronomical wonders observable from Joe Batt’s Arm, the community that is home to Fogo Island Inn.
Then on the Saturday, guests will be free to explore the island at their leisure and with Community Hosts. In the evening, there will be screenings about the mysteries of the planets, as well as a fascinating solar presentation. To finish the weekend off with a big bang—so to speak—after supper, guests will accompany Jim on a dark-sky adventure in the historic Irish community of Tilting, which sits on the edge of the wild Atlantic Ocean under Newfoundland’s famously star-glittered skies.
