Coast to Coast with Guest Chef Alex Chen

Fogo Island Inn welcomes Vancouver-based guest Chef Alex Chen for an exploration of Canada's culinary landscape from the west coast to the northeast coast, August 28 - 31, 2019.

Understated finesse and precision married to a tireless dedication to both craft and time-honoured family traditions have helped write a recipe for success for Chef Alex Chen. A classically trained chef with a true taste for high-pressure culinary competitions, Chef Chen led Team Canada to a top-10 finish at the 2013 Bocuse d’Or in Lyon, France prior to opening Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar in Vancouver, BC in 2014. He went on to claim the top spot in both the 2015 and 2017 editions of the annual Gold Medal Plates BC regional championships, and the gold medal at the 2018 Canadian Culinary Championships. 

Focusing on the unique bounty of fresh produce, proteins and seafood available year-round from local farms, fields and fisheries, Boulevard Kitchen & Oyster Bar was recently named Best Upscale and Best Seafood restaurant in the 2018 Vancouver Magazine Restaurants Awards, in which Chef Chen also received the prestigious Chef of the Year title. His visit to Fogo Island brings the Pacific to the North Atlantic for a culinary collaboration with the Inn's Executive Chef Jonathan Gushue. Guests will connect with Fogo Island’s traditional foodways and participate in the fishery that has shaped the Island for generations, embarking on a marine excursion to handline for the humble fish that changed the world: the North Atlantic cod.
