Make Time to Make: A creative retreat with Island artisans

Meet with local makers to learn the art of handcrafting.

April 8 – 12, 2022
(Also running March 23 - 27, 2022)

Art-making and craft are woven into Fogo Island’s social fabric. Fogo Islanders have become masters of making things by hand, recycling, and devising local solutions to all manner of challenges. Our remote island's centuries-old DIY culture makes it an unparalleled site for creation. Fogo Island Inn has developed a creative retreat to familiarize our guests with the rich tradition of making that has engrossed generations of Fogo Islanders.

From April 8 – 12 (or March 23 - 27, 2022), guests will take part in three custom workshops guided by Skilled Makers. Participants will gain new skills and finish with three functional objects to take home:

Woodworking - Half-Day

This skill development workshop will be led by a team member of our sister social business, Fogo Island Workshops, and  will take place in the Society of United Fishermen Hall in Joe Batt's Arm, a short walk away from the Inn. Guests will gain confidence using tools after shaping, sanding and oiling one of our iconic washed boards (retail price: $200 +HST). Participants will even have the option to burn in their own personal Maker's Mark.

Pottery - Half-Day

Creating with clay is a meditative experience. This workshop will take place at Fogo Clay Studio, which sits on the edge of the water in the community of Fogo. The surrounding environment provides inspiration for the studio's glaze-colour palette, which includes shades such as sea glass, driftwood, and blueberry. Guests will spend a half-day creating pieces by hand building or on the pottery wheel.  The session will allow enough time to create a mug or pot. Should your time on Fogo Island come to an end before your work is ready to take home, Fogo Clay Studios will ensure your creations are glazed, fired, and safely shipped to you.

Quilting - Full-Day

The much-loved Fogo Quilt can be found in virtually every household on Fogo Island. This workshop will allow guests to familiarize themselves with the rich tradition of textile making that has engrossed and occupied generations of Fogo Islanders. It will be guided by a Master Quilter in the beautiful Orange Lodge, a short walk away from the Inn. Participants will pick up a needle and thread and leave with a quilted pillow-case made of Fogo Island Workshops' iconic textiles.

Additional cost for the Creative Retreat: $1,300 per person

Workshops will take place on Saturday, Sunday and Monday. Before or after the workshops, guests can spend more time creating, enjoy Fogo Island's hiking trails, or curl up by one of the Inn's woodstoves with a good book and glass of wine. Every stay at Fogo Island Inn offers a complete hospitality experience that includes all meals, land excursions, and full use of the Inn’s facilities, such as the rooftop hot tubs, saunas, and cinema. Fogo Island Inn is a non-tipping community, and all employees and guides participate in an incentive-based bonus plan.
