Fogo Island Fish at Home

If you’ve stayed with us at Fogo Island Inn, you’ve likely had the pleasure of enjoying the products of our sister brand, Fogo Island Fish, in our dining room. Fogo Island Fish began as a pilot project in 2015 and has since expanded into a full-fledged social business dedicated to sustainable fishing and paying fishers above market rates for their catch. Just like Fogo Island Inn, Fogo Island Fish is a Shorefast social business and 100% of surpluses from operation support Shorefast’s ongoing economic development projects and charitable initiatives on Fogo Island.

In contrast to industrial-scale fishing which was responsible for the near collapse of cod stocks, the fishers who work with Fogo Island Fish use the traditional hand line method: fish are caught one by one with a single hook and line, with zero by-catch. They are bled at sea, gutted, washed with sea water, and stored on ice. Fogo Island Fish preserves local jobs by working with the community-owned Fogo Island Co-operative Society, Ltd., who fillet, debone, and flash freeze the product to ensure maximum freshness. Fewer hands touch the fish from the water-to-plate, ensuring high quality product and also the highest financial return for fishers; the lack of intermediaries and exceptionality of the cod enables Fogo Island Fish to pay them well in excess of the market rate.

Fogo Island Fish has expanded its offerings to include cod tongues, cod cheeks, snow crab, shrimp, Greenland Halibut (Turbot) and squid. We’re proud to share that our North Atlantic Cod, Snow Crab and Northern Pink Shrimp are Ocean Wise Recommended.

Fogo Island Fish is a staple in the award-winning culinary creations of the Fogo Island Inn, and its products are typically featured in fine-dining restaurants across Canada. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, most restaurants unfortunately remain shuttered, but there is some happy news for home cooks: many Fogo Island Fish products are now available for home delivery in certain parts of Canada thanks to our partners!
