Library & Cinema

Across Fogo Island and Newfoundland, stories weave their way from outport communities, coastal villages, and diverse cities to create the tapestry of who we are. Immerse yourself in our culture and traditions when you visit our Library or Cinema.

A library of all things Newfoundland

Located on the second floor, the Library features an extensive selection of fiction and non-fiction works pertaining to the history and culture of Newfoundland and Canada. Many of the books in the Library originated from the private collection of the late Dr. Leslie Harris, former president of Memorial University of Newfoundland. Dr. Harris possessed a wonderful range of materials pertaining to rural Newfoundland life, the fisheries, wildlife, and the sea.
The Inn’s collection was further expanded when Harry and Doreen Cuff added to the Library by donating a copy of every book they published in their long history of publishing Newfoundland books through Harry Cuff Publications Limited. The resulting Library is a rich and meaningful assemblage of works that can help orient guests to all that Fogo Island and Newfoundland have to offer.

A cinematic cultural experience

Designed by architect Nick Herder, our 37-seat Cinema exists in partnership with The National Film Board of Canada. Fogo Island benefits from a long-standing relationship with the NFB, which features many great films about Fogo Island in its collection, including the Fogo Process films.
Herder was inspired by classic Art Deco-style movie houses, but adapted his design to fit within the contemporary appearance of the Inn. The result is an unusual space within the building — one of the few without a reference point to the island beyond the films playing on a screen framed within the room. Step into a black box where red accents lead you through the room in red-carpet style.
Featuring a state-of-the-art digital projection and sound system, the Cinema doubles as a lecture theatre and presents daily scheduled screenings or special film showings and presentations. Check the board outside the Cinema for today’s programming or ask us about booking a private screening. After all, it’s your Cinema.
