There are many ways to get to Fogo Island… the journey itself is part of the experience...

Simply said, you just need to make your way to Gander, Newfoundland (YQX), the closest international airport to Fogo Island Inn. From there, we’ll take over!
There are seasonal direct flights into Gander from Toronto, Montreal, Halifax and St. John’s.
By flying into Gander by mid-afternoon, you can get to Fogo Island Inn in time for supper. For the journey Gander-Fogo Island, see options for ground/water transfers as well as private air transfers on this page.

The guidance below is subject to change by air carriers so please check with airlines or your travel partner for the most accurate information.

You can travel to Fogo Island and arrive for supper if you fly Air Canada direct to Gander (YQX) starting in June. From March to June, we recommend flying Air Canada Toronto (YYZ) to Halifax (YHZ), then Halifax to Gander (YQX) which can be also be done in one day.

Year-round, we recommend flying Air Canada Montreal (YUL)/Ottawa (YOW) to Halifax (YHZ) to Gander (YQX). This routing should have you on the ground in Gander by early afternoon, and at Fogo Island Inn for supper. There is also a seasonal direct flight from Montreal (YUL) to Gander (YQX) starting mid-June through early Fall, although it requires an overnight in Gander in order to catch the first ferry to Fogo Island the next day.

 

When travelling from Calgary (YYC) to Gander (YQX), we recommend flying via Toronto (YYZ) or Halifax (YHZ) and arriving in the morning to catch the daily flight to Gander. Direct flights from Calgary to Halifax are available with Air Canada, WestJet and Porter.

 

Direct flights are available from Vancouver (YVR) to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) with Air Canada and WestJet, which will allow a connection to the direct Air Canada flight to Gander, same day. It’s also possible to fly into Halifax (YHZ) in time to catch the daily flight to Gander (YQX).
Other carriers can fly Vancouver to Toronto or Halifax and require an overnight to fly to Gander the next day.

 

Same day travel to Fogo Island is possible with an early morning arrival in Toronto (YYZ) before 8am.
With an early morning arrival in Toronto, one can catch a direct flight to Gander with Air Canada from June to late November. Air Canada offers direct flights out of La Guardia (LGA) or Newark (EWR).
United Airlines flies Newark (EWR) to Halifax (YHZ) arriving late afternoon. One can overnight in Halifax and catch a flight to Gander (YQX) the next day.

 

Same day travel to Fogo Island is possible with Air Canada out of Boston (BOS) via Toronto (YYZ), which easily connects to the direct flight to Gander (YQX) which runs from June to late November. Alternatively, we recommend flying via Halifax (YHZ) to Gander (YQX), which may require an overnight in Halifax.
Other carriers also offer direct flights from Boston (BOS) to Halifax with the overnight in the city to catch the Gander flight the next day.

 

Direct flights are available from Los Angeles (LAX) to Toronto Pearson (YYZ) several times a day with Air Canada or WestJet. From Toronto (YYZ), there are direct flights the next day to Gander (YQX) available with Air Canada from June to late November.
Other routing options to Gander (YQX) can include Halifax (YHZ) or St. John’s (YYT).

 

Direct flights are available from London Heathrow or Gatwick to Toronto (YYZ) and Halifax (YHZ).
A direct flight to Gander is possible the next day.

 

There are direct flights offered from Germany’s major airports into Toronto and Halifax (YHZ) seasonally. Due to the arrival times, an overnight is often required, then a flight to Gander (YQX) the next morning.

 

There are direct flights from Paris (CDG) into Toronto (YYZ) with Air Canada and Air France. Due to the arrival times, an overnight is required, then a flight to Gander (YQX) the next morning (June to end of November).

 

Fogo Island has a 3,000 ft/914 m airstrip (Fogo Aerodome CDY3) operated by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador located at 49.30.27N 054.14.15W at an elevation of 80ft/24metres AMSL. You can fly directly to our airstrip via charter plane. Depending on your starting point, you can fly private charter all the way, or you can fly commercially to St. John’s (YYT), Gander (YQX) or Deer Lake (YDF) and then fly charter to Fogo Island.

The airstrip on Fogo Island can easily accommodate a fixed-wing 12-passenger Beech 1900D aircraft, and the 37-seat Dash 100.

We can advise you regarding charter helicopter services available from Gander (approx. 30min) and from St. John’s (approx. 1.5hr) to our airstrip.

The Inn offers a land-and-ferry house-car pick-up and return service from and to Gander for $1100 (1-4 person capacity). All transfer logistics and accommodations can be arranged by our reservations team at 1 855 268 9277.

Access to Fogo Island is through a passenger and vehicle ferry, operated by the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador several times each day. The crossing takes about 45 minutes*, including some trips that stop briefly at neighbouring Change Islands. During this time, you will be able to take in the stunning Hamilton Sound.

*Please note that until May 2024, a different and larger ferry is being used and the crossing takes just over an hour.
