Get Ready To Let It All Hang Out (Again)
The communities of Fogo Island are invited to let it all hang out (on the line) on Saturday, May 4, 2019, in celebration of the Island's rich tradition of quilting. Organized by Fogo Island Inn, this second edition of our Spring Season Community Quilt Hang Out encourages all households to hang their quilts out on the clothesline together, creating a tapestry of colour and pattern for all to enjoy and celebrate. Residents are then welcomed to send in photos of their favourite quilts swaying in the breeze for a chance to be entered into a draw for a one-night stay at Fogo Island Inn. Submit your pictures by email to [email protected] and be sure to include your full name and preferred method of contact (phone number or simply an email address is fine). The winning name will be drawn on May 18th, 2019, to be contacted shortly thereafter.
Quilting is an integral part of the culture of Fogo Island. Quilts made here are easily recognized by their vibrant and spontaneous array of patchwork, traditionally completed with hand-embroidered, decorative, herringbone stitching. Emerging out of necessity and thrift, these quilts began as a patchwork of fabric odds and ends from pieces of clothing that had run their course, and when combined with other patches became something utilitarian, but also something beautiful. We look forward to marvelling at all the colourful expressions of artistry and craft in our communities on May 4th. See you then.
